How Portable EEG Is Bringing Brain Health Access to All

Every year, World Brain Day brings the global neurology community together around a shared conviction. This year's theme, Brain Health: Access for All, puts that conviction to the test — because for hundreds of millions of people around the world, access to even basic neurological care remains out of reach.
At Neuroelectrics, we think about this often. Not just as a principle, but as a practical question: what does it actually take to bring brain monitoring to the places and people who need it most?
The Geography of Brain Health
Neurological conditions — epilepsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury, dementia — affect an estimated 3.4 billion people worldwide. Yet the vast majority of diagnostic infrastructure sits in a relatively small number of urban centers in high-income countries.
The treatment gap in low- and middle-income countries is stark. In many regions across Sub-Saharan Africa, there may be fewer than one neurologist per million people. Furthermore, EEG, a foundational tool for diagnosing epilepsy and monitoring brain health, is simply unavailable to most patients who need it.
This is not just a clinical problem. It is a systems problem — shaped by infrastructure, geography, and the design of the tools themselves.
Why Portable EEG Changes the Equation
Traditional EEG systems were built for fixed clinical environments: gel-based electrodes, complex setups, dedicated technicians, and stationary hardware. They do their job well inside the walls of a well-equipped hospital. But they cannot travel. They cannot reach a rural clinic two hours from the nearest city, a field research station, or a community health post with limited infrastructure.
Portable EEG changes what is geographically possible.
The Enobio system from Neuroelectrics was designed from the ground up to remove the barriers that keep EEG from being used outside the hospital. These are not incremental improvements to existing systems. They are the features that make it possible to think about portable EEG in a fundamentally different way — not as something that happens in a hospital, but as something that can go to the patient.

What Portable EEG Access Actually Means
World Brain Day is a good moment to reflect on what "access for all" requires in practice. It requires tools that can work outside of ideal conditions. It requires pricing and distribution models that do not automatically exclude lower-income markets. And it requires companies in the medical technology space to make deliberate choices about where they invest their commercial energy.
Portable EEG is not a silver bullet. But it is a meaningful piece of the puzzle — one that removes a significant structural barrier to brain health in the places where it is most needed.
